Regulation 1 - BREEDING AND REGISTRATION GOAL

The Trakehner Breeders Association of New Zealand (Inc.) (hereinafter called TBANZ), is committed to adhere to the highly selective breeding standards practiced through more than two centuries in Trakehnen and the province of East Prussia and continued since 1947 in Western Germany by the Trakehner Verband in the breeding of the horse of Trakehner origin. By practicing these standards, the TBANZ desires to encourage the development of a riding horse of beauty and harmony, great endurance, mental and physical balance, and possessing an excellent character. The breeding goal is the production of a high quality multi-purpose performance horse for dressage, jumping and eventing as well as hunting and hacking.

 

Regulation 2 – GENERAL BREEDING STANDARDS

  1. Obedience, willingness to work, elegant flowing and elastic movements, good jumping manner and endurance are the dominant characteristics of the Trakehner breed.

  2. Small noble heads are desirable as they show nerve and energy. The neck should be well set and of significant length. Withers should be pronounced clearly and visibly, the shoulder shall be long and sloping and the back should be of medium length. The croup shall be long, muscular and of oval shape. A deep wide ribcage should be connected to a substantial frame, representing a horizontal rectangle.

  3. The following measurements shall provide a guideline for the selection of adult Trakehner breeding stock:

Stallions: Height: 162.5 – 172.5 cm

Girth: over 183 cm

Cannon: over 20cm

Mares: Height: 157.5 – 170 cm

Girth: over 178 cm

Cannon: over 19cm

 

Regulation 3 – INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION

  1. The TBANZ follows the principles and guidelines of the German Trakehner Verband and co-operates in matter of Studbook, conformation and performance standards.

  2. The TBANZ will co-operate with the German Trakehner Verband and other Trakehner Associations in all continents.

 

 

Principle Stud Book

Trakehner mares may admitted into the PRINCIPLE STUDBOOK

With a minimum score of 6 for any category at the classification.

Trakehner mares branded Warmblood, but with papers stating

Pedigree will be allowed into the PRINCIPLE STUDBOOK,

Provided they have a minimum of 6 at classification.

Apirant Stud Book

Other mares TB,ARAB, ANGLO-ARAB will from this date must

be inspected by either 2 classifiers or by 1 classifier together with the

Aspirant classifier, and must achieve a minimum of 70 % average with no less

than 5 in any category.


Stallions

Stallions which are presented after May 2007 for in hand classification,

Will follow the following rules;

Upon passing the in hand classification stallions, are given an temporary breeding licence.

During this period, they can only breed 10 mares per year.

Maximum time for the temporary license is 3 years.

They must achieve the following performance criteria;

Stallions under 6 yrs of age

Participate and be placed in top 25% at Eventing training level,

On 3 different occasions.

Stallions over 6 yrs of age.

Participate and be placed in top 25% at Eventing on 3 different

occasions or at Medium dressage or Show Jumping in 1.25 meter

Classes.

Finalising the Approval

After meeting the above criteria the stallions will be represented at the next classification, they must present a minimum of 5 progeny for the German classifier and the rest of the panel.
Stallion owners can select the progeny to be shown.

Owners must sign a contract to abide by the breeding rules of the
Trakehner Breeders Association, before the inhand classification.

 

Mare and Stallion fees

Broodmare fee $10 Per Annum
Fully Approved Stallion Return Fee $150 Per Annum
Temporary Stallion Licecence Fee $100 per Annum
Registration/Branding Fee $30

DNA

Trakehner Stallions must DNA tested.

The committee reserves rights to DNA Trakehners at Random, cost to

be recovered from stallion owner if the horse is not by the stated Dam or Stallion.

Using AI

Permission from the committee to use AI is no longer required provided that .

All Stallions from here or overseas, can and will provide DNA papers to the NZTBA

From their respective breeding Organizations,

Once presented to the Committee they will be kept on file at the registrars office.

Branding of Progeny

Only Double Moose Brand to be used on all elligible progeny, Branding must be completed before weaning..

REGISTRATION NUMBERS

Registration numbers shall be consecutive and assigned to approved breeding horses chronologically according to the earliest dated application for registration.

 

– REGISTRATION OF IMPORTED HORSES AND SEMEN

  1. Before any imported horse eligible for registration shall be registered with the Association, the owner of such horses at the time of importation shall make application therefore on a form supplied by the Association which application shall include the name, sex, colour, and markings of the horse to be registered. Said application shall be accompanied by the necessary fee, the import form showing the date of importation, the registration certificate or pedigree and a photocopy thereof. The copy shall be retained by the Association and the original returned to the owner.

  2. At the discretion of the committee any imported Trakehner mare or stallion previously approved for breeding by an association outside New Zealand may be approved for inclusion in the Principal Studbook, providing the regulations governing registration were observed in the country of origin.

  3. Imported horses which have not previously been approved by an association outside New Zealand shall be classified into the studbooks according to Regulations 4, 5,and 6.

 

– PERSONAL INSPECTION

A personal inspection of any potential breeding stallion or broodmare or foal may be made by the classifiers, or by a member or members selected and approved by the Council of the TBANZ.

 

BREEDING REQUIREMENTS

  1. To be eligible for registration a foal must be begotten by natural service or artificial insemination as provided in 2) below.

  2. No artificial insemination is permitted except upon prior approval by the Association.

  3. The paddock serving of stallions to mare is permitted providing the mare, or mares, are exposed to only one stallion.

  4. After a mare has been covered by one stallion, forty-five days shall elapse before exposure to another stallion.

  5. All Principal Studbook stallions shall be bloodtyped prior to approval to stand at stud, by an approved laboratory prior to being used for breeding purposes and an official copy of ht e official blood typing report shall be filed with the Association.

  6. If in the opinion of the classifiers there is reasonable cause to question the parentage of a foal the committee may require the dam and foal to be bloodtyped at the expense of the owner of the foal. The results of these tests together with such other information as may be available may be taken into consideration by the committee and its determination of the foals parentage and registration.

 

– STALLION SERVICE CERTIFICATE

  1. A stallion service certificate shall be executed in triplicate by the Stud Master of the stallion.

  2. The stallion service certificate shall contain the name of the mare, her registration number, the name of the stallion, his registration number and the date of service.

  3. The completed original copy shall be returned to the Association, the second copy forwarded to the mare owner and the third copy of the stallion service certificate shall be retained by the Stud Master of the stallion for his record.

 

– STALLION RETURN FORM

When a stallion commences stud duties a stallion return form must be forwarded to the Association. The stallion return form shall included the name and registration number of the stallion. A stallion return form must be completed annually and lodged with the Association by the 31st of March for the duration of the stallion’s breeding life.

 

– MARE RETURN FORM

  1. The owner or lessee of a mare served by a Trakehner stallion must submit a mare return form annually as provided by the Association by the 31st of March.

  2. The mare return form shall include the mare’s registration number, if applicable, colour, name, last date of exposure to the Trakehner stallion, his name and number of the stallion service certificate.

  3. The mare return form shall state if the mare was not pregnant, slipped the foal, if the foal died or is alive.

  4. If a foal was born the mare return form shall include the date of birth, sex, colour and markings of the foal.

  5. The original shall be returned to the Association and one copy shall be retained by the owner of the dam for his record purposes.

 

– FOALING SLIPS

The owner of the dam at the time the foal is born shall execute an application for registration of the foal on a foaling slip provided by the Association. The foaling slip shall include the sex, colour, markings and foaling date of the foal and also include the name, registration number and colour of the sire and dam. The foaling slip shall be returned to the Association within one month of foaling date.

 

– REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

  1. All transfers of the sire and dam must be completed before any horse may be registered.

  2. Upon receipt of the foaling slip by the Association an original certificate of registration shall be issued to the person who was the owner of the dam at the time of foaling. The certificate shall contain the same description of the animal as contained in the foaling slip, appropriately identifying the horse as registered in the Official Registry Book of the Association, and specifying the registration number.

  3. A duplicate certificate of registration will be issued to the owner if the original certificate has been lost, on application and accompanied by the required fee and statutory declaration explaining the loss of the original.

  4. The Association and its officers shall use diligence in securing true information in connection with registration of any and all animals registered by it, but neither the Association nor its officers shall be answerable in damages for the issuance of any certificate of registration made in conformity with information supplied by the applicant for registration.

– TRANSFERS

  1. When an animal is sold, the seller shall endorse in full and deliver to the buyer its certificate of classification and or registration and the buyer shall promptly forward said certificate and required fee to the Association. Transfer of registration must be made to each subsequent owner upon receipt by the Association of the registration certificate fully endorsed by the person(s) to whom issued as provided on the certificate.

  2. All transfers of ownership or leases of any animal and dates of sales or leases must be duly recorded, prior to any progeny being eligible for registration.

  3. Whenever title to a registered animal passes to another by reason of death of the owner, the Association may transfer the registration of such animal to the new owner free of charge upon order of a court of competent jurisdiction or other satisfactory proof of transfer of title. However, future use of the horse in breeding is restricted until the new owner becomes a member of the TBANZ.

– GELDINGS

When a previously registered and classified stallion is gelded, the certificate of registration and classification with the date of gelding noted thereon, must be surrendered to the Association. An endorsement that the horse has been gelded shall be placed upon the certificate which shall then be returned to the owner of the horse.

– DEATH OF A REGISTERED ANIMAL

  • The death of a registered mare or breeding stallion shall be reported on the mare return form or stallion return form.
  • The certificate of registration of a deceased mare, stallion or gelding must be surrendered for cancellation. Cancelled certificates must then be returned to the owner
